Malcorta is an almost extinct Verdejo grape, exclusively revived by Javier Sanz, a winemaker, after years of research to produce a unique wine.
Traditionally, the Verdejo Malcorta was cultivated in the D.O. Rueda, but the difficulty of harvesting it led to its abandonment.
Javier Sanz has reproduced the genetics of this clone because it offers elegant aromas and higher natural acidity.
It gets its name from the woodiness of its stem, which makes harvesting challenging. The grape was “badly cut,” and for this reason, it was rejected by growers. Additionally, it ripens later than the conventional Verdejo, giving it higher acidity.
The wine has a pale straw yellow color with brilliant clarity. On the nose, it shows very clean and intense aromas, with notes of citrus, white flowers, stone fruits, and subtle mineral hints.
On the palate, its acidity stands out, enhancing its fresh and lively character. Malcorta is a surprising wine with unique nuances, exquisite natural acidity, and a marked persistence.
